Czech companies grain ground in European energy business
25.01.2010
Unicorn Systems, along with ELEKTROSYSTEM, have won the tender of the TSO Security Cooperation (TSC), security initiative of 11 European Transmission System Operators (TSOs) providing safe electricity supply for 170 million European citizens. Thus, Czech software houses will jointly deliver the software platform for common security analyses of the electricity transmission system.
TSC Initiative
The TSC (www.tso-security-cooperation.eu/) initiative is an association of European transmission system operators (TSOs) from The Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Poland, Czech Republic and Austria. The objective of TSC is to develop methods and tools to better manage the growing operational needs with special regard to the integration of wind energy, increasing cross-border trading and increasing electricity transport. All this aims to improve the security and stability within the European electricity system. At present, the initiative has 11 members and is expected to grow. For example, the Hungarian MAVIR has already acquired the observer status.
In late July 2009, the TSC launched the Real-time Awareness & Alarming System (RAAS), allowing quick reactions of power grid managers in case of alarming situations in neighbouring systems. In August, a tender has been announced to find a provider for the IT platform for data sharing and operational security assessments (Common Tool for Data Exchange and Security Assessment - CTDS System). The tool will provide every participating TSO with data and assessment results and enable them to perform advanced studies for the identification of remedial actions. Thanks to amongst other things their expertise and years of experience, Unicorn Systems and ELEKTROSYSTEM have been awarded as the best candidates to develop this tool from among strong international competition.
Vladimír Kovář, Chairman of the Board, Unicorn Holding, comments: “For us, winning this tender was critical for our long-term strategy and we really appreciate it. In European energy business, this is one of the most important projects for the next ten years. It fully attests to the ability of Unicorn Systems to compete beyond the borders of the CzechRepublic and become a truly global player.”
Jan Smrž, Chairman of the Board, ELEKTROSYSTEM a.s., adds: “Our success in this tender is the pinnacle of our work in development and implementation of power grid control systems for twenty years of our existence. We really appreciate it and are glad, that ELEKTROSYSTEM may contribute to improving the coordination of operations of European TSOs, the importance of which continues to grow. I believe that along with Unicorn we can handle the task.”
The CTDS system will be used to gather information on the states of transmission systems and to use the information to provide security analyses on the transnational level. The CTDS will make a difference; especially in times with steadily growing impact of volatile and less predictable energy sources such as wind power. It will start to gather and evaluate virtually real-time operation data, highlighting potential threats to better identify coordinated remedial measures to efficiently prevent from emergency situations.
